Within the automotive industry, there are different functions which are relevant for the Zemission company. Our technology makes a major difference in terms of efficiency, cost, and compliance to new legislation.
There are heaters for battery-packs in hybrid vehicles. Temperature management of the battery-pack is important in order to preserve capacity and battery life. Lithium-ion batteries needs to be between 20 C and 40 C in order to deliver maximum performance. Electrical heating is a simple answer but drains the battery-pack and leaves the vehicle with a significant loss of driving range and fuel economy.
There are interior space heaters for cars, buses, and trucks. Heating the interior while driving through cold air requires a significant amount of energy. Traditional fuel burning heaters are now rapidly covered by legislation, making them obsolete. For hybrid vehicles, electric heaters drain the battery and leaves the car with reduced driving range. A Zemission heater runs on fuel from the main tank, using no electricity. All energy in the battery-pack can be used to maximize the driving range.
There are also pre-heaters for exhaust after-treatment systems for use at cold-start and during low-load operation. Such systems are needed due to tougher legislation. Immediate heat is needed for the system to reach operating temperature quickly. Only zero-emission heat is acceptable.
Legislation is rapidly covering more areas of the automotive industry. For example, real driving cycles are introduced and auxiliary equipment will be included. Requirements are getting tougher and the industry needs to comply.
Five to ten years ago, the automotive industry was fragmented in terms of technological response to a coming shift away from fossil fuels. There were fuel cells, bio-gas, E85, methanol, and dual fuel engines. Only recently has electrification and hybrid solutions taken a clear lead and the market of hybrid vehicles is now developing rapidly. The automotive industry will build some 3 million hybrid vehicles by the year 2020, and some 9 to 10 million by 2025.
Rather synchronized, Zemission is now at a point where the company is ready to approach the automotive industry and offer a product which is greatly needed.
